Balancing Work and Home Life

There’s a lot of talk today about the need to balance work and family life — and how difficult it is to do, especially for small-business owners.

It’s true — for enterpreneurs, balancing work and family is uniquely challenging. Whereas people with 9-to-5 jobs put in their time, leave work and devote the rest of the day to families and hobbies, small-business owners carry their jobs with them wherever they go.

An enterpreneur’s busininess is more than just a means to earn a living. It’s the fulfillment of a dream. When you’re not at work, chances are you’re thinking about it — while you exercise… cut the grass… make dinner… walk the dog. Maybe you are like a large number of business owners — conducting business in your off-hours.
The Balancing Act

So, how do you balance work and family life to get the most out of both? It’s really not as difficult as the current media hype would lead you to believe. Here are some easy, but very effective steps…

Know Yourself

Be able to “step outside” of yourself and honestly critique your work habits, asking yourself questions such as…

  • How much am I working?
  • Is it too much?
  • When was the last time I spent time with my family and really focused on them?
  • Am I being selfish, working more than is appropriate or healthy and ignoring my family?
  • Am I allowing a rift to form between me and my spouse… or me and my children?

If the answers to these questions indicate an overemphasis on work; it’s time to think about making changes.
